As reported in this week’s The Brag, V Festival owner Virgin Management is still talking to other promoters about staging the festival in 2010. Michael Coppel Presents decided not to remain a 50% partner but main sponsors Virgin Mobile, Toohey’s Extra Dry and Visa are keen for the event to take place.

A decision is expected in the next few weeks.

Happy Mondays, Razorlight, Ting Tings play V Festival Chelmsford

 Razorlight played the V Stage before The Killers. In a change from his favoured festival outfit of white jeans and no shirt, frontman Johnny Borrell was wearing a black jacket, black jeans and scarf, despite the heat.

The four-piece – including new drummer David Sullivan Kaplan – played an hour-long show of material from throughout their career, including massive hits 'America' and 'Golden Touch', as well as 'North London Trash' and 'Wire To Wire' from last year's 'Slipway Fires' album.

Earlier on people ran towards the Virgin Mobile Union tent to hear VV Brown sing a cover of Kings Of Leon's 'Use Somebody' during her afternoon performance. Her set also included 'Game Over' and 'L.O.V.E'.

The Ting Tings played a colourful set on the 4Music Stage, backed by a brass section sporting neon bobbed wigs, played songs from their 2008 album 'We Started Nothing' including 'We Walk' and Number One single 'That's Not My Name'.

Over in the Arena tent Happy Mondays played an evening show without their dancer Bez. Frontman Shaun Ryder announced that Bez had quit the band, plus explained that his own young cousin was on drum duties for the show. The band played fan favourites including 'Step On' and 'God's Cop' during the show.

Earlier in the afternoon on the 4Music Stage Noisettes created a singalong with their hit 'Don't Upset The Rhythm (Go Baby Go)'.

The Specials lash out at Gordon Brown at V Festival

The Specials branded UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown "a cunt" at the V Festival in Staffordshire this evening .

As the Coventry legends launched into 'You're Wondering Now', singer Terry Hall, who was smoking during his band's set on the V Stage, launched into a tirade.

He said: "I was thinking what the differences were when we last played here 28 years ago. Well, there's the smoking ban, but fuck that.

"We're still bombing the shit out a country we shouldn't be and the Prime Minister is still a cunt. The only difference is Man United are the champions. Righteous."

Earlier, the singer heckled the crowd as he asked: "Are there any Liverpool fans here?" before he added, "Well, you can fuck off."

Fellow singer Neville Staple then chipped in to pay tribute to the England cricket team, who beat Australia to claim the Ashes earlier today.

"What happened today is history," he added. "I am sending this out to the England boys," he continued the band kicked off 'A Message To You Rudy.

The ska legends performed exactly the same set as they did in they did at the Chelmsford leg of the event last night (August 22), where they were joined onstage by Amy Winehouse.

ARCTIC MONKEYS - ARCTIC MONKEYS SET TO SHOCK NMES

Arctic Monkeys are up for seven accolades at this year's Shockwave NME Awards.
The 'Crying Lightning' hitmakers are in the running for Best British Band, Best Album Artwork, Best Live Band, Best Track, Best Video and Best Album and Worst Album for 'Humbug', while frontman Alex Turner is up for two additional awards - Hottest Man and Hero of the Year.
Fellow rockers Kasabian are the Monkeys' biggest rivals, with six nominations including Best Album for 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum'.
Alex, 24, said: "It's a good thing knowing we're still up for these awards. Kasabian have said that there aren't any other proper rock bands apart from us and them.
"I don't necessarily agree completely but I know what they're saying. I think we're just co-existing very nicely."
This year's event takes place at The O2 Academy Brixton in London on February 24.

Lady GaGa booed at V Festival Stafford

Lady GaGa was booed before and after her V Festival Stafford performance tonight (August 22) after arriving late onstage.

The notoriously over-the-top singer caused mass boos after she kept the packed Arena tent waiting 15 minutes past her allotted stage time, with several fans shining their laser pens on the stage backdrop in protest.

When the singer still didn't come onstage, a large collection of fans started slow hand-clapping her.

Eventually, after a further five minutes, the lights dimmed, the backdrop fell to the ground and Lady GaGa appeared in the middle of the stage bathed in smoke, causing the crowd's boos to change into cheers. Launching into recent hit 'Paparazzi', the singer made no apologies for coming onstage late. "England!" she screamed during the track, resulting in mass cheers.


With the set seemingly back to normal, the singer instructed the audience to "Dance, you motherfuckers!" ahead of singing an a capella and improvised song about how much she loved England.

"My name is Lady GaGa, I've been so excited to play V," she said before telling the crowd that it didn't matter how much money they had in their pockets and launching into 'Beautiful, Dirty, Rich'.

She then left the stage as her band played an instrumental interlude. After a short while, two dancers wheeled the flamboyant singer back on, although this time she was wearing a huge wedding hat and oversized sparkly gown.

The Verve To Miss V Festival?

From reliable resources we come to know that The Verve are on the brink of splitting up- according to The Sun- just a few days before they play V Festival.

A report claims guitarist Nick McCabe is not happy about the Wigan groups hectic tour diary and has been getting stuck into the wild lifestyle.

Its alleged the group may miss V and that if they do make the Essex and Staffordshire dates theyre likely to be The Verves last ever shows.

The Verve are just back from Japan and had a big new entry with their single Love Is Noise this week which entered at number 5.

However a label statement said: "The Verve's Nick McCabe injured his finger after the band's recent weekend show in Osaka, Japan.He was treated by medics at the scene. The Verve will headline this weekend's V Festival as planned."

The groups comeback album Forth has received mixed reviews and some critics have claimed that they reformed for the cash.

Elbow encourage crowd to 'fall in love' at V Festival 2009

Elbow tried to inspire V Festival's Chelmsford crowd to "fall in love" during their set this evening (August 23).

Playing the V Stage, the band tried to target the audience, to talk to each other between songs, hoping some romance might blossom. 

The mass love-in was the brainchild of frontman Guy Garvey as his introduced the track 'Mirrorball'.

"This about the day after falling in love, if you've never fallen in love I recommend you try it," he wryly advised the crowd.

"Everyone turn to the person next to you and say hello, now turn to the people behind you. Actually that doesn't work, everyone will be talking to the backs of each others' heads! Still you never know, you might fall in love this very moment."

Sound cuts out at Pete Doherty's V Festival Stafford set

Pete Doherty's headline set at V Festival Stafford's Virgin Mobile Union Tent tonight (August 23) ended in chaotic style after the Babyshambles man had the sound turned off on him.

Despite coming onstage on time and playing a 17-song set, Doherty and his solo band had the sound pulled on them during their final song, a cover of The Beatles' version of 'Twist And Shout'.

The band attempted to play the song with no electricity, but couldn't be heard above the crowd, so gave up. Doherty, visibly perplexed by the decision to cut the music, then shrugged his shoulders and mouthed that he was sorry to the audience, before exiting the stage.

Some fans then proceeded to throw bottles and glasses at the stage for a full 15 minutes, chanting for Doherty to return as they did so and lambasting festival organisers for cutting the band's sound.

Prior to the gigs end, Doherty and his solo touring band had played an eclectic set featuring material from his entire recorded output, along with a Talking Heads cover and a shout out to his favourite football team, Queens Park Rangers.

The Enemy's Tom Clarke: 'Cut Liam Gallagher some V Festival slack'

The Enemy's Tom Clarke has asked fans to cut Oasis' Liam Gallagher some slack after the Manchester band cancelled their headline slot at the Chelmsford leg of the event yesterday (August 23) due to the singer contracting laryngitis.

Clarke, whose band played on the 4Music stage at V Festival, said he believed the illness was legitimate – pointing out that Liam and his bandmate brother Noel have had a challenging relationship for some time.

"If they’ve cancelled it's for a legitimate reason," the frontman of the Coventry trio, who recently supported Oasis, told Absolute Radio. "I hope everyone cuts him a bit of slack and doesn't whinge about it, 'cos shit happens."

Speaking about why he was convinced that Liam's ailment was the genuine reason for the cancellation he added: "They've been on tour since forever. I'm pretty sure they've hated each other since the '90s. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have surmounted in Liam not playing V because they've just realised they don't get on with each other.

"They get on with it. They manage to go on stage and play amazing shows, probably the best live band in the world. The fact of the matter is, the lad's probably got a sore throat. Give him a break. Let him have a day off.

Limited number of V Festival 2010 tickets go on sale

The V Festival is an annual music festival held in England during the penultimate weekend in August. Organised by SJM Concerts, the event is held at two parks simultaneously which share the same bill; artists perform at one location on Saturday and then swap on Sunday. The sites are located at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex and Weston Park in South Staffordshire. Although predominantly a rock music festival, a wide range of musical genres are accepted; in recent years pop acts have become ever more common.
A limited amount of tickets for the 2010 V Festival will be released for sale at the same price as this year's tickets.

Available from 9am in august, the tickets will cost £132.50 for a weekend pass, and £152.50 for weekend pass with camping. The tickets will be on sale for up to a week or until the undisclosed limited number sell out.

“We really want to give fans the chance to buy tickets for next year’s festival at this year’s prices, as it means they can be first in the queue for next year’s festival and save a few quid in the process," says V Festival director Simon Moran.

He added: "V Festival has a great history of brilliant line-ups, and next year will be no exception. We’re looking forward to it already!"

MARISA MILLER - MILLER'S EMBARRASSING WARDROBE MALFUNCTION

DIZZEE RASCAL - DIZZEE RASCAL'S LOVEBOX

The festival, which takes place in London's Victoria Park on July 16th, 17th and 18th next year, will also host Chase and Status on the opening Friday.
Dizzee, who spent his youth in nearby Bow, said: "I'm really looking forward to headlining such a wicked event in the area where I grew up."
Further acts performing at the festival - the first time it has been spread over three days - will be announced in the coming months
Meanwhile, Seattle band Pearl Jam have also been announced as the headliners to the Hard Rock Calling festival in London's Hyde Park.
Hamish Dodds, president of Hard Rock International, said: "For nearly two decades, not only has Pearl Jam been one of the world's top bands, but they have also actively shown their support for several philanthropic causes."
Pearl Jam will headline the event on June 25, with the headliners for the following two days yet to be announced.
It has also been rumoured that rock band Kasabian are to headline V Festival in August next year.

The Killers thrilled the throngs at Weston when they announced that they were an even better audience than the one they’d had last night in Chelmsford, garnering huge cheers from northern fans.

V Continues to shine

Although it may be starting to get dark, the action at V Festival 2009 continues to hot up! Weston Park has been sizzling with fantastic performances from Katry Perry and a gold plated (dress!) Alisha Dixon.

Over on the V stage James’ front man Tim Booth set the evening’s tone with a wild dive into the crowd and Snow Patrol dedicated ‘Eyes Open’ to their favourite band Elbow.

In Hylands Park, the temperatures have also been soaring. Amy Winehouse and Peter Doherty joined The Specials for the last two songs of their set and the crowd went wild. She was looking fantastic - a great homecoming for one of Britain’s most talented stars.

As the sun sets over both sites, excitement is building towards tonight’s headliners. Weston Park, Staffordshire, eagerly await Keane, MGMT, British Seapower and the mighty Oasis.

The Leicester rockers, who have already been confirmed for T in the Park, look set to have a busy summer next year.

Music-lovers go Dizzee at V Festival

TENS of thousands of V festival-goers made their way to the 4 Music Stage for a lively performance by Dizzee Rascal.

The hip-hop star seems to have won the battle to attract the crowds during his head-to-head with Lily Allen, who was on the main V Stage.

Lily Allen entertained the crowds with a performance of her latest hit 22, but got them really swaying with LDN.

The Wombats followed Dizzee on to the 4 Music stage and gave those who stayed a brilliant performance of Moving To New York.

Surprise appearance by Amy Winehouse:

Razorlight played a hit-heavy set at the V Festival in Staffordshire this evening (August 23).
Frontman Johnny Borrell, who was dressed in a black coat, neckerchief and shades, said very little as his band dipped into their back catalogue for an hour-long set on the V Stage.
The group only played four tracks from their recent album 'Slipway Fires' - hit single 'Wire To Wire', 'Hostage Of Love' 'Blood For Wild Blood' and 'North London Trash'.
The rest was loaded with hits from their first two albums as the crowd sang along to the likes of 'Fall To Pieces', 'In The Morning', 'Stumble And Fall' and 'America'.

Liam Gallagher breaks silence on Oasis' V Festival cancellation

Having played the Staffordshire leg of the event, the band pulled out of Chelmsford after Liam Gallagher caught viral laryngitis.

Using Twitter, the singer apologised to fans and bemoaned his inability to sing.

"The voice may of disappeared but I'm still here," he wrote. "First things first V I'm gutted, you're gutted. I'm sorry, what can I say? Fuck all at the moment."

He added: "Secondly, respect to those bands who covered Oasis last night, even though I might of given some of you shit in the past."
Snow Patrol, Keane and MGMT all played Oasis covers at the Chelmsford leg of V Festival last night (August 23).
Gallagher also dismissed tabloid speculation that the band were set to break-up.
"Finally reports in smartarses' column about Oasis last British gig ever," he concluded. "The kid's talking out his arse, I mean Rkids, beware of darkness."

V Festival owners

Blink has been involved in the V Festival since 1998. In 2004, we were asked by Maztec,

the festival owners, and Chanel 4 to pitch for the TV production and have undertaken it ever since.

In 2008, this manifested itself as the biggest coverage of a live music event on commercial TV in Europe.More than 32 hours of programming was broadcast from the V site at Chelmsford over the weekend , dominating the launch of 4 Music, Channels 4’s dedicated new channel. All in all, every song from more than 50 bands on the 3 main stages was filmed and recorded.

On site to manage this huge task was a team of 293 people headed up by Blink’s dedicated production team .

We even built two stunning and original sets to provide the backdrops for all the artist interviews and links.During our years covering V Festival, we’ve filmed some of the biggest names in the business including Muse, Prodigy, Amy Winehouse, Chemical Brothers, The Killers, Foo Fighters, Kanye West, Kasabian, Lily Allen, Radiohead, Morrisey and Keane.

The Killers:

The Killers are an American alternative rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, formed in 2002. The band consists of Brandon Flowers (vocals, keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitar, vocals), Mark Stoermer (bass guitar, vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums, percussion).

Part of the post-punk revival movement, The Killers draw their influences from music styles of the 1980s. The group's debut album, Hot Fuss (2004) brought the band mainstream success. The Killers' second album, Sam's Town, was released in 2006, and compilation album Sawdust containing B-sides, rarities, and new material, was released in 2007. Their third studio album, Day & Age, produced by Stuart Price, was released in 2008.

Razorlight:

Razorlight is an English-Swedish indie rock band formed in 2002. They are primarily known in their home countries, having topped the charts with the 2006 single America and its parent self-titled album, their second. The band consists of lead singer and rhythmic guitarist Johnny Borrell, guitarist Björn Ågren, bass guitarist Carl Gustaf Dalemo and drummer David Sullivan-Kaplan ("Skully").

The Specials:

The Specials (sometimes called The Special AKA) are an English 2 Tone ska revival band formed in 1977 in Coventry, England. Their music combined a "danceable ska and rocksteady beat with punk's energy and attitude", and had a "more focused and informed political and social stance" than other ska groups. The group was formed by songwriter/keyboardist Jerry Dammers, with Terry Hall (vocals), Lynval Golding (guitar, vocals) and a rhythm section. The band wore mod-style "1960s period rude-boy outfits (porkpie hats, tonic and mohair suits, and loafers)." In 1979, the song "Too Much Too Young", the lead track on their The Special AKA Live! EP, reached number one in the UK. In 1981, the unemployment-themed single "Ghost Town" single also hit number one in the UK Singles Chart. Their music is featured in film and television soundtracks. After seven consecutive UK Top 10 singles between 1979 and 1981, the band broke up. In 2008, it was announced that the band would reform and embark on a 30th anniversary tour in 2009.

Lily Allen:

Lily Rose Beatrice Allen (born 2 May 1985) is an English recording artist, talk show host, and actress. She is the daughter of actor and musician Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen. Her teenage years comprised her evolution in musical tastes, from glam rock to alternative. She ran away from home to attend the Glastonbury Festival at the age of fourteen. A year later, Allen abandoned school and concentrated on improving her performing and compositional skills. Afterwards, she created several demo songs, and near the end of 2005, she created a profile on MySpace, where she made some of her recordings public.

Criticisms

The festival has been noted for its commercial nature in comparison with other British music festivals. V Festival has received criticism for charging £10 to buy a programme - the only way festival-goers can see what time artists are performing - while others have mentioned the fact burgers cost £7 and water bottles are sometimes confiscated at the entrance, costing up to £2 once inside the grounds. Some fans have referred to the organisers of the event as 'greedy'.

Despite this, the New Statesman argues that the commercial nature has some advantages:

"Yet there are undeniable advantages to the [commercial] environment. V is a remarkably non-threatening festival, with few of the rougher edges prevalent at other large-scale gatherings."

The London Evening Standard gave the 2009 festival 3/5 stars after headliners Oasis cancelled at the very last minute due to illness. Furthermore, approximately 800 people were injured with most being down to falls causing sprains and ankle injuries.

In 2009, organisers were forced to restrict entry to Lady GaGa's performance at Chelmsford after fans became stuck trying to fight through the narrow entrance to The Arena stage.

After Michael Coppel pulls out

THE V Festival is in doubt after Australian promoter Michael Coppel declined to renew a deal with Sir Richard Branson to stage the event. While other established summer music fests including Big Day Out and Homebake have sold out in record time, it is unlikely the hugely expensive Branson branding exercise will go ahead next March without a local concert heavyweight behind it. "For the past three years, the Virgin Group and Michael Coppel Presents have worked together to deliver the acclaimed V Festival to Australian audiences," Coppel said in a statement. "The presentation of V Festival in 2009 concluded this arrangement and the partnership is not being renewed. "The Virgin Group will make further announcements regarding V Festival in Australia in the coming months." Coppel, who enjoyed phenomenal success with the Pink tour this year, has not left the business of staging all day music events and is believed to be working on a festival for late 2010, reports Music Editor Kathy McCabe.
He could reignite the Livid festival, last staged in Moore Park in 2003 with The White Stripes and Linkin Park. V Festival, held in Centennial Park for the past three years, hosted a huge array of big-name acts, including the reunited Pixies, Duran Duran and The Killers. Branson said a couple of years ago when he attended the Sydney event that, while it had lost money, he was committed to supporting the festival because of the "audience experience". Last year's festival crowd experienced the apology of American rapper Vanilla Ice for his crimes against music.

V Festival 2009

Tickets for V 2009 went on general sale on 6 March 2009. A limited number of tickets went on sale at 10am on 19 August 2008, following the end of the 2008 festival. Weekend tickets were priced at £132.50 (no camping) and £152.50 (with camping) for the weekend. On 2 March 2009 NME confirmed The Killers and Oasis as headliners. However, Oasis did not perform in Chelmsford due to illness (viral laryngitis) . Oasis split-up as a band several days later, making their Staffordshire show their last.

The event was held on 22 & 23 August 2009.

Originally, the festival took the name of the current year, with the first festival being named "V96". Since 2003 it has been known as simply the V Festival. The idea for V came in 1996 when Pulp's front man Jarvis Cocker announced he'd love to play two outdoor venues in two days. Pulp's promoters got together and came up with the idea of putting the gig into Victoria Park Warrington and Hylands Park Chelmsford giving fans in both the North and South a chance to see the band. Then came the idea of adding more bands to the bill, putting on a second stage and letting people camp for the weekend.

Introduction

The V Festival is an annual music festival held in England during the penultimate weekend in August. Organised by SJM Concerts, the event is held at two parks simultaneously which share the same bill; artists perform at one location on Saturday and then swap on Sunday. The sites are located at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex and Weston Park in South Staffordshire.
